Dr. Sven DietrichDr. Sven Dietrich, Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity and Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, is interviewed on Tuesday’s Marketplace Tech Report show on American Public Media. An expert on Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, Dr. Dietrich explains how hackers have perpetrated recent DDoS attacks on Wikileaks.org, using botnets to hijack the computers of unsuspecting victims. Botnets, which can be procured on the black market, secretly infect computers to send bogus traffic to the site, forcing it to shut down. The computer’s user is unaware that the machine has been hijacked.

Dr. Dietrich has authored and co-authored a number of books and articles on botnets and DDos attacks, including the book, Internet Denial of Service: Attack and Defense Mechanisms, and “P2P as botnet command and control: a deeper insight,” an article that won the Best Paper Award at the Third International Conference on Malicious and Unwanted Software (Malware 2008). As a pioneer in computer and network security, Dr. Dietrich observed and analyzed the first DDoS attacks against the University of Minnesota while working as a senior security architect at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
