Mozilla and the National Science Foundation are calling for innovative applications that will define the unlimited internet of the future. The open innovation challenge, which has been dubbed Ignite, will disburse a total of $500,000 over the course of the program to fund and support the best next-generation apps. 
The challenge begins with a “Brainstorming Round” where anyone can submit and discuss ideas until August 23rd, 2012. The most promising ideas will receive funding and support to become a reality, with $15,000 to be awarded in the first round. Later rounds will focus specifically on application design and development, and all are welcome to participate.
Mozilla Ignite is part of the US Ignite Initiative, a national effort to explore what’s possible through ultra-fast broadband networks and “ignite” the development of next-generation applications. It includes start-ups, local and state government, universities, industry leaders, federal agencies, foundations and local communities across the U.S.
Entrants can design and build apps that revolutionize focus areas such as Advanced Manufacturing; Education and Workforce Technologies; Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety; Healthcare Technologies; and Clean Energy and Transportation
